Chrono Trigger is arguably one of the greatest SNES RPGS of all time. It was first released nearly two decades ago (March 11, 1995), and has since been made available on various platforms including iOS, Nintendo DS and more. The first Chrono Trigger spawned an acclaimed sequel called Chrono Cross, which was also just as successful if not more so.

Until recently, Chrono Trigger was available for iOS only, except in Japan where it was also available for Android devices. Square Enix has just made it available to everyone because Chrono Trigger went on sale in the Google Play market on October 29^th.

If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to pick up a remake of Chrono Trigger, now might be your best shot. The Android version also includes two additional dungeons, and a new ending, which were specifically developed for the Nintendo DS version. Chrono Trigger already has so many game endings though, that one more might be easily lost in the fray.

You’ll have to pay a substantial cost to play Chrono Trigger on your Android smartphone because Square is offering it for $9.99. That being said, this is a full-fledged game with a seemingly endless supply of content. Sure, it is an extremely old game, but it was originally developed for the SNES console and not mobile devices. That means what you are getting in Chrono Trigger is so much more than what you would get from the average title offered via Google Play.

Personally, we are extremely pleased to see Chrono Trigger finally making its way to Android, but we’re even more excited to play it!

Chrono Trigger opens up like most other RPGs, with the main hero sleeping. His name is Crono, unless you choose otherwise, and it appears he has overslept. His Mom is there trying to wake him from his slumber, reminding him kindly that he’s missing the millennial anniversary celebration for his country, the Kingdom of Guardia. He hops out of bed, and rushes off to experience the festivities. At the fair, he meets an adolescent girl named Marle, whom he immediately befriends. He then shows Merle around, including taking her to an exhibition put together by another friend named Lucca. As it would turn out, Lucca and her father developed an experimental teleportation device that happens to malfunction and subsequently sends Marle and Chrono through time. This is where the real story of Chrono Trigger begins.

Chrono Trigger is Optimized For Touchscreen Devices

The entire user interface of Chrono Trigger has been revamped, and most of the changes have been made to make it more convenient on touchscreen devices. Menus and buttons are larger, and the controls are much simpler. A virtual joystick lets you move your character around the world while tapping directly on an object, person or item interacts with it. That’s pretty much it for the controls.

Of course, there is a sub-menu where you can mess with the party’s inventory, equipped items, and perform necessary actions. There’s nothing too complicated about it, though.

In combat, a menu also appears to give you the necessary actions like “attack,” “tech,” and “item.” If you’ve played the first Chrono Trigger, or one of its many variations, you already know exactly what we mean when describing the combat system.

There is one negative about the Android version, and that’s because of the native resolution of the app. It does not operate in Fullscreen mode, but instead scales the image and keeps black widescreen bars on the side. We can’t see any particular reason for not scaling the image to the device’s full screen. We consider this to be a blatant maltreatment of the added screen real estate. Most of these devices already have small enough displays without developers cutting down on the native resolution. Hopefully Square adds an option in a future update that allows us to scale the game to a Fullscreen mode.

Chrono Trigger is Available Now

If you’re a longtime fan of the Chrono series, then the Chrono Trigger Android port won’t disappoint.

It certainly has a higher price tag than most of the games available via Google Play, but you also have to remember just how much content you’re getting when you purchase this game. Chrono Trigger alone is an impressive undertaking, and when you add in the extra content that was added in the Nintendo DS version, it gets kind of ridiculous to think about. There are 14+ game endings to unlock, loads of dungeons to explore, and hours upon hours of gameplay content. Needless to say, if you do pick up Chrono Trigger for your Android, you’ll be playing it for quite some time.
